In the Ligurian Sea, between Corsica, France and Italy, the Alcyon – a ketch of 12 metres long, especially equipped by Ecoguide International, is sailing across the Mediterranean Sea since the 8th august.

On board, a team of film specialists, journalists and marine environment specialists, chosen by Ecoguide International, with the objective that Jean Philippe Beau Douëzy is pursuing since 10 years: make known, loved and protected the cetaceans in the Mediterranean Sea. Leaded by the big experience of the skipper, Jacques Landron. For him the Mare Nostrum has hardly any secret: 40 years of sailing, for 10 meetings with dolphins, fin-whales, long-finned pilot whales and sperm whales which are living in this closed sea, whose only entry for them was Gibraltar. How long have they been there? Where do they live and what are they doing in wintertime when nobody meets them on account of the bad weather.

Ecoguide International has equipped the sailing boat “The Alcyon” with a specific film-material: a camera fixed under water on the stem, moving, tele-controllable, manoeuvrable from the tip-outside and from inside of the boat, another installation at the top of the mast, tele- controllable, without counting the classical material: camera on the shoulders, … Ecoguide International has mobilised a team of professional cameramen, enthusiasts by the adventure, to carry out a didactic documentary thanks to the participation of specialists and ludic with beautiful, unexpected images. The dream: to find the financing of a more ambitious film which will mix science, fiction and the beauty of images.

Today, the 23rd of August, the Alcyon is leaving after a break caused by technical problems : Toulon and some days of shooting in the 25 miles-zone of the coast. The weather not very favourable up to now, with too strong winds to locate the cetaceans, seems to get better: an anticyclone for the Province is forecasted. It may complete the images of fin-whales, striped dolphins, long-finned pilot whales and sperm whales which were already watched in the canyon between the Côte d’Azur and Corsica.
