The Keel

The first step consists in building the keel and the main floor timbers as well as their extensions. The keel is composed of a piece of wood all in one piece, originally 19 meters long.
Antonio Maria, Aderson’s brother, carves the keel with an adze.
The keel has a relatively square section.
The stem
The stem is fixed on the keel.
The stem comes as a continuation of the keel.

The rib

The floor timbers
The main lumbers are put around the first quarter, the half and the third quarter of the keel. Painted in red, they are used as a support for the installing of the surrounding timber on each side, extended from stem to stern, as you can see here on the photograph. This frame allows the installation of the lumbers, every 40cm.
The wood pieces that will make the future floor timbers are being prepared in the workshop.
The wood piece has been put on and the carpenter hollows a notch to fit it into the keel.

He will then draw the rib profile. The cut-out is made with a chain saw, with an extraordinary skill. Finally, the floor timber is being put on.

The timbers are installed with an extension joined at knee level.
